Aromatherapy |
Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic essential oils for both physical and psychological benefit. It has been described as:
1. A branch of herbal medicine (medical/clinical aromatherapy) . Oils used in treatment of certain medical conditions and diseases.
2. A branch of beauty therapy (aesthetic aromatherapy). Enhances relaxation and a harmonious environment - used by beauty therapists.
3. Holistic aromatherapy which combines the 2 practised by a professional - assessment of client's lifestyle, nutrition, exercise, overall physical and mental well-being. However, holistic aromatherapy is not a branch of anything, it is a therapy in its own right and deserves to be recognized as such.
Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that takes into account the whole body and lifestyle of a person and aims to treat the root of the problem and not just the symptom. It is a therapy that treats the mind and emotions as well as the physical body with the use of essential oils for health and relaxation, as well as being a pleasurable and luxurious treatment that combines remedies with hands-on therapy and body work. It is also used as a preventative therapy rather than curative.
Aroma means scent or fragrance and therapy means treatment designed to cure, therefore aromatherapy literally means a treatment that has a therapeutic effect as a result of this scent. It is the plant essence that is used in the treatment rather than just the scent, hence the term "essential" oils, rather than "aromatherapy" oils.
Aromatic oils are used in three classes of consumer goods: - Foods - natural flavourings ie: oils of lemon, orange and lime in marmalades - Toiletries - cosmetics, perfumes, toothpaste flavourings - Medicines - flavouring agents & as therapeutic ingredients in their own right
